JACK DUNHAM WAS A BURLY MAN, the sort who had been muscular and built in his younger days but had gone soft across the middle as he aged. He was still an imposing sight, and Thredson reacted accordingly when he and Sully were ushered into the ornery man’s office. Sully? The more he thought about things, the more petulant he got.

“Sir, I’m ready to give you my verbal report,” Thredson started.

“I’ve already received multiple reports from the scene,” Dunham replied, his gaze on Sully, who was sulking in one of the wingback chairs across from his desk. “You may wait outside while Detective Sully and I have a discussion.”

“But ... sir?” Thredson was obviously confused. “I can’t just leave. I’m the complaining witness on this case. You need to hear my report. Procedure says —”

“I’ve already read your initial report,” Dunham barked, his eyes flashing with impatience. “I don’t need to hear it a second time. I would like to speak to Detective Sully in private. Do you have a problem with that?”

Thredson must’ve read something dark in the recesses of Dunham’s eyes because he immediately raised his hands and backed toward the door. “No, sir. I believe this is your milieu.”

“Great. Get out.” Dunham never moved his eyes from Sully’s face, waiting until he heard the familiar snick of the door to speak. “Are you out of your mind?” he hissed, keeping his voice low. “Do you have any kind of idea what sort of mess you’ve created here?”

Sully was expecting the reaction. He was prepared. “That kid is a menace.”

Dunham made a face. “Of course he’s a menace. He’s green ... and gung-ho ... and all about procedure. He can’t see beyond what he believes should happen. He doesn’t care about anything but getting his own way on this one.”

“That’s not my problem,” Sully argued. “What happened in that park today ... .”

“Was a total mess,” Dunham interjected. “I get that. I’m familiar with Bishop. The guy is harmless, if a little odd. That doesn’t mean that woman should’ve inserted herself into the situation.”

Sully found he didn’t like his boss referring to Ofelia as “that woman” and gritted his teeth as he debated how to respond. Before he could, Dunham let loose a sigh ... and smirked.

“Oh, good grief.” Dunham dragged a hand through his thinning hair and looked to the ceiling. “So, the rumors are true, aren’t they?”

Sully folded his arms over his chest, confused. “What rumors?”

“You’re involved with this woman.”

“I ... .” Sully offered up a curt nod. “She’s my girlfriend.”

“I can’t believe you just said that without a gun pointed toward your head.” Dunham made a tsking sound as he rounded his desk and planted himself in his chair, his gaze speculative. “Since when do you have a girlfriend?”

“Since ... now. It’s rather recent.”

“Obviously.” Dunham’s tone was dry. “We’re talking about the owner of Krewe, right? The woman with the dark hair and big ... .”

Sully narrowed his eyes to dangerous slits.

“Smile,” Dunham finished on a smirk.
